Community Infrastructure Upgrades

July 23rd, 2009 admin No comments

It would appear the pipeline for Saskatoon water to be piped to Dundurn, Hanley and area is moving right along with the announcement on July 22nd, 2009 of Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest in Community Infrastructure Upgrades

The total cost of the project is $21,218,136, with the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan contributing $7,072,712 each.  The Dundurn Rural Water Utility will contribute the balance.

Dust Control

July 16th, 2009 admin No comments

Just a few short weeks ago I was speaking to Terry about the dusty conditions of our roads in the Town.  I was enquiring why we didn’t treat the roads as other communities sometimes do.  The short answer (and about what I expected) was the cost.  For a smaller community to treat all their roads would likely push our taxes up too high for most of us.

It was shortly after this that it started to rain in our area.  You have to admit, rain is quite the ‘dust control’ mechanism.  The other nice thing about the rain (other than for the farmers of course), is the rain has softened the roads and allowed Terry to get out and level them a bit.  Even with all the rain we received in the last week or so, the roads did not get as muddy as they normally are after a good rain.  However, even this morning, there is still quite a bit of water pooling in the ditches and on the edge of the golf course so the ground is fairly saturated.  It is probable that this water will soak in this weekend as the heat is supposedly returning.

I think I will put up with a bit of dust if we can get some summer sun for a bit :)

New Animal Control Bylaw

July 15th, 2009 admin No comments

From what I have been told, it was an interesting (if not vocal) Town Council meeting last evening (June 13th). Approximately 20 extra people were in attendance at the meeting to speak about the recently ‘Animal Control’ bylaw that was just instituted.

There has been a petition going around Town recently wanting the new bylaw rescinded and reverting to the previous bylaw. The feeling was that this new bylaw was too harsh in penalties and unnecessary. The petition felt the old bylaw was more than adequate and the Town should hire a local person as the ‘Dog Catcher’ rather than bringing in an expensive company from Saskatoon. The Town had advertised in the past for a new ‘Dog Catcher’ after the previous catcher passed away, however, the Town was not able to locate anyone willing to take on the task. Some in attendance at the meeting felt that maybe the Town didn’t advertise hard enough and a different method of the actual advertising may have brought forward a likely candidate. There apparently is at least one person willing to take on this position from within the Town.

As I’m not a current pet owner, I only quickly read through the new bylaw to get the gist of it.  The penalties for a first offence did seem to be quite high though on my reading.  One other aspect of the bylaw that was offensive to some people was the amount of animals an individual house could have.  Whether it is too low or too high, I don’t know.  Maybe a complaint of neglect or numerous offences from an indivual house would be a better method of tackling this part of the bylaw.  What ever eventually resides in the bylaw I would believe that everyone agrees we do in fact need a bylaw of some sort to keep order in the animals in the Town. Whether this can be accomplished by tweaking this new bylaw or reverting to the previous one or creating a whole new bylaw is unknown at this time. Hopefully our Town councillors can come up with a bylaw that will satisfy the majority of people in the community.

In one aspect it seems the Town is getting some action from the citizens in the Town with their new bylaw and recent actions. First we had the Town meeting last week regarding the water in the community and now this new bylaw.   That is good news as far as I can see.  The more that people of the community get involved, the better we can make the Town.

Trihalomethanes In Water

July 10th, 2009 admin 1 comment

It was an interesting meeting on Monday night.

Our mayor advised that we had trihalomethanes in our drinking water and that it may be cancer causing. At least that is what I thought he said. It was very hard to hear at times with the microphone cutting in and out. But it certainly sounded like trihalomethanes and then he referred to them as “THMs”.

If this wasn’t what the mayor referred to, we probably have them in our water as the Town does use chorline to try and cleanup the water.
